Finding the right energy supplier for your business

When you’re running a small business, every penny counts. So when it’s time to switch supplier or choose a new energy contract, it’s important to do your research. Here are some considerations to take into account before you commit:

  • The best option may not always be the cheapest – does the supplier have a proven record in excellent customer service and reliability?
  • Be sure to have a copy of your latest bill to hand when speaking to potential new suppliers. It may be handy to read more about understanding your business energy bill
  • If using a price comparison site, be sure that you understand all the costs involved, as some do not highlight all fees upfront.
  • Do the products on offer fit the needs of your business? While you can benefit from the security of a five year fixed contract, if your business energy usage is likely to change considerably, it may be better to choose a more flexible or short term contract.

Electricity network charges are changing

Ofgem, the energy regulator, is introducing changes to the way Residual Charges (part of network charges) are collected. This change is designed to make revenue collection fairer for all electricity customers.

Once implemented, your supplier will get a new fixed daily charge and a reduction in the pence per kilowatt hour charge. What you see on your bill will depend on your contract terms.

These changes will happen in stages, with a final implementation date of April 2022.
